Course Description
This course provides an overview of the Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) Act and regulations for managers, employees, and others who need to know about TDG, but are not responsible for TDG activities. It includes information about your responsibilities for the transport of dangerous goods, especially for training and certification of company personnel. It will also help you understand the purpose of theĀ TDG Act and Regulations. Terms and concepts, and the requirements of the TDG are clearly explained. Examples and quizzes reinforce learning.
A record of completion is provided by CCOHS upon successful completion of the final exam. A formal TDG Certificate of Training is issued by the employer when they determine their employee has a sound knowledge of all the topics and has received workplace specific training that directly relates to their duties with dangerous goods. The course was developed by CCOHS.
Topics include:
- Introduction and overview of theĀ Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) Act and Regulations
- The TDG Act and Regulations, including training, classification, documentation, safety marks, means of containment and emergencies.
Upon completion of this course you will be able to:
- Understand the purpose of the TDG Act and Regulations
- List company responsibilities under the TDG Act and Regulations
- List employee responsibilities under the TDG Act and Regulations
- Describe the main training and training certification requirements as they apply to road vehicle transport
Average time to complete this course is approximately 2 hours.
This course includes theĀ SOR/2017-253 TDG regulatory amendment.

Guidelines for Training Criteria:
Transport Canada has prepared guidelines to help understand the training requirements in Part 6 of theĀ Transportation of Dangerous Goods Regulations. For further information on the guidelines, seeĀ https://www.tc.gc.ca/eng/tdg/publications-cladvisory-advol1enew-267.htm.
The course does not cover the 6.2(l) ICAO and 6.2(m) IMDG training requirements.
Note:Ā In addition to taking this course, workplace specific training for the type of substance handled and type of equipment used must be provided by the employer.
CCOHS offers three other TDG courses to meet your specific needs:
- Transportation of Dangerous Goods:Ā A complete 8-module course designed for managers and supervisors, TDG coordinators, and those who have responsibilities for determining the training requirements for employees who will be handling dangerous goods. This 8 module course is optional for workers who need to know about and perform duties relating to TDG.
- TDG for Carriers:Ā Intended for employees who transport dangerous goods, which may include loading and unloading shipments.
- TDG for Consignors/Consignees:Ā Intended for employees who work for shippers and receivers and perform duties relating to TDG.
Prerequisite
Prior technical knowledge of the transportation of dangerous goods system is not a requirement. However, familiarity with practices in the transportation industry is helpful.
