Validity of certifications

  • Operator needs to have current certification for family of equipment operator operates


  • Current Fall Protection certification
  • PPE for Practical Training
    • Site specific Personal Protective Equipment
    • Inspected harness

Equipment for the practical training

  • Equipment for the practical training needs to be supplied.  Equipment must be in safe working order and to pass pre-job inspection.  When equipment, due to unsafe conditions cannot be used, another needs to be available, or another practical training session to be organized.  It may cause additional expense for training.


  • 100% attendance, and successful accomplishment of operation of equipment to the competency level

Class Size

  • Minimum 1, Maximum 3

Course Duration

  • 4-6 hours of in-field practical training, depending on type and size of equipment
  • After training, if required, competent operator or supervisor to evaluate competency of operators.


It is an employer responsibility to evaluate competency of operators on every type of equipment operator operates.  Having competent operators does not guarantee that they possess skills to properly train new or new to the equipment operators, or that they will have time to do it.  Training hands-on during work requires constant presence of competent supervisor and stops this person from active work.  Oil Sands & Construction Training & Safety Ltd instructors trained hundreds of operators to the competency level in operation of various types of Elevated Work Platforms


This training also evaluates students if they can safely operate equipment, and this feedback will be given to the employer.  Accomplishing classroom training for equipment operator and hands-on equipment awareness training (usually around 15 minutes) does not make student a competent operator.


Operators experienced on particular type of equipment cannot be treated as competent on different type due to the difference in operational controls, behavior of machines and operating characteristics.
