Violence or harassment in the workplace can affect all business sectors and occupations. Customers, clients, patients, students, workers, intimate partners, or family members may hurt, threaten, or harass workers while they are on the job.
In this e-course you will learn how to comply with the requirements of Ontario’s Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHS Act) regarding workplace violence and harassment.
Ontario’s requirements for protecting workers from violence and harassment are complex. Your best defense is to provide your senior managers, supervisors and workers with initial and ongoing violence and harassment prevention training.
Participants will learn why it is important to address violence and harassment in the workplace, specific legal duties for compliance, how to develop an effective program, and how to prepare for domestic violence should it enter your workplace.
Developed by CCOHS in collaboration with WSPS, this course features interactive learning through assessment tools, case studies, review quizzes, “Ask a Question”, and access to resources from CCOHS and WSPS. Those who score at least 80% on the final exam will be able to print a certificate of completion.
- Introduction: A work environment where violence and harassment is tolerated has clear financial consequences. This section tells you why you need to care about violence and harassment in the workplace.
- Legislation: Ontario’s OHS Act sends a strong “take action” message to employers. Find out what the employer’s specific legal responsibilities are to prevent workplace violence and harassment.
- Develop a program: Preventing and controlling workplace violence and harassment doesn’t have to be complex. Apply the simple four step process and tools to build an effective violence and harassment program.
- Domestic violence: 70% of domestic violence victims are also abused at work by the abuser. Find out how you can be prepared when domestic violence comes into the workplace.
Upon completion of this course you will be able to:
- Describe the negative impact of workplace violence and harassment on employees and their organization.
- Identify the employer’s legal responsibilities to prevent workplace violence and harassment according to Ontario’s OHS Act and other related legislation.
- Describe and apply knowledge of the hazard recognition, assessment and control process and tools to develop a violence and harassment prevention policy and program.
- Identify the employer’s legal responsibility to take reasonable precautions to protect an employee from the risk of physical injury due to domestic violence in the workplace.
Average time to complete this course is about 120 minutes.
The course has been designed to assist employers with the development of effective policies and programs, using input from managers, supervisors, joint health and safety committees, health and safety representatives, and workers.
Prior technical knowledge of health and safety is not a requirement. However, familiarity with workplace processes and practices is helpful.
